As long as you can just power off your brain, relax, and surrender to this film’s powerful sense of goofiness, you might find yourself in a junk food coma, as well.

Mercy flirts with all these flaws, but the filmmakers thankfully show just enough restraint to let the power of its source material shine through.  

This instantly invokes the openings of Alien and The Abyss, two classic movies that only remind us of everything this one lacks.

I don’t know if this idea warrants anything more than a few weird minutes, but I am definitely curious to see the angry tweets it generates.  

While it can’t hit and hold the same high notes as its classic predecessors, fans of the genre will find that Onward is still better than just about anything out there.

Ultimately, Richard Jewell plays like an immense tragedy, the garbage-strewn mess left after a media circus moves its dog-and-pony show somewhere else.

I haven’t read the book, and it may be better than what we see here.  One thing’s for certain:  This movie is not a convincing advertisement for it. 

The one good thing about this story makes all of its flaws that much more frustrating.
